Jazz Judges

Allen, Dr. George
Dr. George Allen comes to us as a highly exceptional woodwind performer. He has conducted the Community College of Philadelphia Jazz Band, All Catholic Honors Elementary Band, US Army Band, “Pershings Own”, PMEA District 12 Band, and Bucks County Honors Band. He has been guest speaker at the Mt. Airy Scholarship Jazz Festival, and Princeton Presbyterian Church on “Spirituality in Jazz Music”. He has also collaborated with Wynton Marsalis to re-create the Duke Ellington Orchestra with high school students for MENC conference in Boston. He is a member of the Association of Jazz Educators and Research in Music Education, Jazz 90. Dr. Allen holds a Bachelor, Master and Doctorate from Temple University in Music Education and is presently Assistant Professor of Music at Cheyney University, Adjunct Professor at Immacalata College, and Director of the Community College of Philadelphia Jazz Band. He is retired from the School District of Philadelphia. He was also Department Head of Art and Music Magnet Program at Overbrook High School.

Binek, Justin
Justin Binek assumed the role of Assistant Professor of Jazz Voice at The University of the Arts in the fall of 2005. In this position, Justin directs the Jazz Singers and teaches musicianship, improvisation, and applied voice. A 2000 graduate of the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND, Justin completed graduate school at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI, and received national recognition as a recipient of two DownBeat Magazine awards (Outstanding Collegiate Vocal Performance 2001, Outstanding Collegiate Jazz Choir 2002). Prior to teaching at UArts, Justin returned to the University of Mary, where he served as the Director of Jazz and Choral Ensembles and taught vocal and keyboard jazz studies, musicianship, and musical analysis. An active performer as a singer, pianist, saxophonist, and steel drummer, Justin is also in demand as a clinician, arranger, and composer. He serves as the Vocal Jazz and Show Choir Coordinator at the International Music Camp in Dunseith, ND, and is a partner in the Heartland Vocal Jazz Camp in Tiffin, OH.

Broschak, Michael
Mike Broschak is currently the band director at Whitehall-Coplay Middle School in Whitehall, PA. He has taught instrumental music in the district for over thirty four years in both the high school and middle schools. During his tenure he has directed the high school marching band, concert band, jazz ensemble, pit orchestra, and the middle school 7th & 8th grade concert band, 5th & 6th grade concert band, and the jazz lab band. Mr. Broschak received a BS in Music Education from West Chester University in 1974, and his M. Ed. in Music in 1981. He furthered his education with post graduate studies in music composition, jazz arranging and film scoring at Berklee College of Music in 1985-’86. In addition to his career in public education, Mr. Broschak has worked as a free lance marching band and jazz ensemble arranger. He has been a marching band adjudicator and clinician from 1976 to the present, and a jazz adjudicator from 1990 to the present. Mr. Broschak has composed works for middle school concert bands. He has additionally worked as a composer in creating radio commercial jingles, and composed the music for the stage musical “Abracadabra” in association with playwright, William Marley.

Capolupo, Dr. James
Dr. Jim Capolupo began his career in education as an elementary music teacher. He also taught at the middle and high school levels in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Dr. Capolupo was Director of the Jazz Band at Cabrini College and Princeton University, and was the Director of the Instrumental Music Department and Assistant Professor at Lincoln University. He is one of the co-founders of the Pennsylvania All State High School Jazz Band. He has served as President of the PA National Association of Jazz Educators, and as Music Caption Chief and Judging Coordinator for the Cavalcade of Bands. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Capolupo has served as a judge to over 1000 marching, concert and jazz band festivals and parades, and was a judge for the last ten years for The Miss America Pagent Parade in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was also inducted into Cavalcade's Hall of Fame in 2007. Dr. Capolupo is the Director of the American Music Abroad Bronze Tour and will be headed to Europe with over 200 high school musicians this summer on a concert tour of Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium. He will be directing an all-star jazz band with some of the finest student musicians from the East Coast. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education, a Master of Arts Degree in Education, a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Human Relations and a Doctorate of Musical Arts. Dr. Jim Capolupo is presently Superintendent of Schools in Springfield, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Capolupo’s career in administration began as a coordinator of Fine Arts, then an Acting Principal, Assistant Principal, an Elementary Principal, Director of Elementary Education and an Acting Superintendent.

Chodoroff, Art
Art Chodoroff has demonstrated an intense dedication to the music education of  young people for more than thirty years. His jazz influence is seen through his fifteen year leadership of the Temple University Jazz Ensemble which featured such artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Woods, Michael Pedicine, Jr., Mel Lewis and Larry McKenna. Mr. Chodoroff was also the originator of Temple University's Greater Philadelphia High School Jazz Festival  presented in conjunction with FM station Jazz 90. Professor Chodoroff is extremely active as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator and has participated in band as well as jazz festivals throughout much of the eastern and southern United States. Mr. Chadoroff holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from Temple University. He studied clarinet with Joseph Gigliotti, Donald Montanaro and William Stubbins. He was also a conducting student of the late Elizabeth A.H. Green. Arthur Chodoroff is currently the Director of Bands and Professor in the Department of Instrumental  Ensembles and Orchestral Studies at the Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University. He is also  Conductor of the Wind Symphony as well as Director of Temple's Diamond Marching Band and instructor of courses in instrumental music education techniques.

Cossetti, James
Jim Cossetti began his study of trumpet and music theory in 1958 with Anthony Marchione in Philadelphia, where, during his high school years, he was lead trumpet in marching band, dance band. dance band, show band and orchestra. He also was student teacher and conductor and sang with two a cappella R&R groups in Germantown (Phila.) area. After graduation he continued to perform with several R&R groups, small jazz trios and quartets in the Philadelphia and Wilmington areas, while continuing studies with Mr. Anthony Mattarese. In the mid-seventies to early 80's he continued trumpet studies and played with Mr. Richard Garrick, president and principal trumpet of the New Jersey Brass Quintet. During this time he also taught and played with several brass ensembles. From 1993 to 2004 he was part of the music staff at Coatesville Area Senior High School, where he was instructor, technical advisor to and occasional performer with the "Coatesville Brass" ensemble. He has performed with many local groups and with Doc Severinsen. In October 2002 he assisted with formation of an international comedy singing group, "The Castaways" and became musical arranger and conductor. He is also a member of both the International Trumpet Guild and International Association of Jazz Educators. Currently he is a performing member of The Music Express mixed brass ensemble and is a music adjudicator with the Cavalcade of Bands Association. He teaches all brass instruments at all levels out of four studios in Chester County.

Darrohn, Jeff
Mr. Jeffrey Darrohn is a composer, arranger, recording artist, saxophonist, conductor and educator in both the United States and United Kingdom. In 2006 he was signed to Jazzed Media Records which recorded and released his album Jeff Darrohn, T-Bird ’60 featuring his jazz compositions and arrangements for six saxophones, piano, bass and drums. Released in 2007, it aired on jazz radio stations throughout the US and BBC Radio in the UK for four straight months and now is gaining airtime throughout Canada, Australia and New Zealand. As a bandleader, his group SAXON-UK and SAXON-USA have performed in both the US and UK, including the 2007 International Saxophone Symposium-Washington DC and the 2008 London International Jazz Festival. As a saxophonist and woodwind player he has freelanced in the UK with the famed BBC Radio Jazz Big Band, Pete Cater Big Band, Buddy Rich Tribute Big Band, Glenn Miller UK Orchestra, Miles Davis Project Band, Jacqui Dankworth, Kanye West, and the Ronnie Scott Big Band. In the US he has performed with Phil Woods, Urbie Green, Buddy DeFranco, Lou Rawls, Mel Torme, and Robert Merrill. Mr. Darrohn’s compositions for school jazz bands have been published by Alfred Music’s Belwin Jazz division since 2007. He also composes and arranges music for school bands, universities, professional organizations and various vocalists. He has delivered workshops, clinics and lectures concerning instrumental music instruction, jazz improvisation, composition and orchestration. Mr. Darrohn has taught for over twenty years in both the US and the UK including the Richmond Adult Community College Jazz School and Roehampton University. He has a Bach. of Music and Music Education from the University of the Arts and a Master of Music Education from Boston University.

Dicciani, Marc
Marc is the Director of the School of Music at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and a Professor of Drumset and Music Business, and Co-Chair of the National Advocacy Committee of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). As a drummer, he has made concert appearances with a wide variety of artists including Randy Brecker, Joey DeFrancesco, Jon Faddis, Phil Woods, Lew Soloff,  Clark Terry, John Fedchock, Jeff Jarvis, Diane Schuur, Charles Fambrough, Christian McBride, John Blake, John Swana, Robin Eubanks, Gerald Veasley, Pat Martino, Grover Washington, Jr., Jimmy Smith, Boyz II Men, Joan Jett, and Peter Nero; he’s played with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., the Spinners, Lou Rawls, Mel Torme, and Natalie Cole, and worked on studio sessions for NBC, ABC, and CBS television in bands with Doc Severinsen, Snooky Young, Pete Christlieb, Ron Carter, James Moody, Ernie Watts, Stevie Wonder, Ray Parker, Jr., and Lee Ritenour, and recorded for Concord Records with guitarist Jimmy Bruno. He spent many years touring internationally with entertainer Ben Vereen, with whom he still continues to perform in concert. Marc has conducted countless clinics at colleges and universities including American University, University of Nevada Las Vegas, Villanova, University of Southern California, Duquense, Cal State Long Beach, University of Delaware, Temple, the Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts (England), Projazz (Santiago, Chile), Tamagawa University (Japan), and at many conferences for the International Association of Jazz Education, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, New Jersey Education Association, New Jersey Association of Jazz Educators, and at the Philadelphia Grammy in the Schools Day. He also teaches the nation’s only drumset course for music educators at Villanova University each summer. Marc is an artist/clinician for Yamaha Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Regal Tip Drum Sticks, and Remo Drum Heads, and writes for Modern Drummer and In-Concert magazines.

Dressler, Chuck
Chuck Dressler is a graduate of Penn State University.  He is a past president of the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Association of Jazz Educators.  Chuck also served as the director of the Al Grey Jazz Camp.  He is retired director of bands at Pottstown High School and remains active in jazz education. As a professional trombonist Mr. Dressler has performed with the following: The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, The Harry James Orchestra, The Ralph Carmichael Orchestra, The Dave Stahl Sacred Orchestra and Big Band, Buddy DeFranco, Bill Watrous, The Temptations, Manhattan Transfer, Natalie Cole, Patti Austin, Simone, Perry Como, Wayne Newton and Johnny Mathis.

Frabizio, Dr. Bill
Through the years, Dr. Bill Frabizio's name has become synonymous with trumpet expertise and jazz  education. His efforts and contributions in the field of jazz education are virtually beyond  enumeration; he has performed with the Count Basie, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller bands, just to name a few. Dr. Frabizio holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Temple University, a Master of Music Education from Rutgers University and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Temple University. Dr. Bill Frabizio is currently the Music Chair at Arcadia University  where he has successfully introduced new jazz emphasis into the Music Education curriculum.

Frank, Dr. Art
Arthur Frank has spent the past forty-five years as a professional jazz performer on vibes and drums. He has participated in over one hundred and twenty professional music theater productions as director and conductor. Some of these productions included such stars as Gordon McCrae, Don DeLuise, Elaine Staich, Ellie Stone, Julius LaRosa and Larry Kert. Frank’s  classical efforts include twenty years as principal percussionist/timpanist with the Trenton Symphony Orchestra. He is also the principal percussionist with both the Princeton Chamber Orchestra and the Delaware Valley Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Frank holds a BS and MA from Trenton State University and a DMA from Temple University. He has also completed post Doctoral studies at Columbia University which included private study with Saul Goodman of the New York Philharmonic. Arthur Frank is Professor of Music Education at Temple University where he especially enjoys teaching jazz improvisation classes.

Gallagher, Matt
Matt Gallagher earned his undergraduate degree in Music Education from West Chester University in 1997 and earned a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of the Arts in 2001. Matt has performed as a lead trumpet player with professional bands in Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and Wilmington Delaware. As a member of three local musicians unions, he has performed with several Broadway show productions and artists including Randy Brecker, John Fedchock, Robin Eubanks, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Lou Rawls, Bernadette Peters, The O’Jays, The Stylistics, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Barry Manilow, and many others. Matt is currently the lead trumpet player for the Lars Halle Jazz Orchestra as well as a member of Chico’s Vibe, one of the region’s top party bands. In addition, Matt is a regular studio trumpet player at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, NJ, and Larry Gold Studio in Philadelphia. Matt has recently recorded for Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, R Kelly, and LL Cool J to name a few. Matt is equally committed to both teaching and performing. Currently, Matt is the undergraduate coordinator of music education, trumpet teacher, and big band director at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Glaser, James
Jim Glaser is an exceptional jazz pianist who was recognized as an outstanding soloist by Frank Wess at the Notre Dame University Jazz Festival in 1998. He has performed with such artists as Seneca Black, Denis DiBlasio, Vaughn Nark, Bilal Oliver, Arturo Sandoval, Jim Snidero, Chris Vadala, Marty Erickson, Tim Warfield, Dan Yoder and the Charlie Van Horn Big Band. He was also a featured soloist with the Altoona Symphony as a jazz pianist. Glaser is also an accomplished trombonist and performed with the Pennsylvania All-State Jazz band for two years. Jim Glaser is presently a music teacher in the Central Bucks School District.

Greenwald, Bruce
Bruce Greenwald is a jazz saxophone and clarinet player with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from West Chester University. He founded the Audubon Jazz Explosion Big Band and the Dixie on the Side Dixieland Band, directing and performing in both groups for over ten years. With two album credits to his name, Bruce was the executive producer of the Audubon Jazz Explosion "Debut" and "Summertime" CDs. On the classical side, he has been the assistant director and principal clarinetist of the Audubon Symphony Orchestra. Most recently, Bruce has performed with the Philadelphia Legends of Jazz Orchestra, the Main Street Sound Big Band, the 22 Park Avenue Big Band, and the Pennsylvania Dance Swing Band. With a passion for performance in musical pit orchestras, Bruce has been seen in over 45 musical stage productions. Bruce's teaching experience included elementary and middle school instrumental, general, and vocal choral music. He now enjoys the mature level of talent he hears at the high school level while adjudicating with the Cavalcade of Bands organization.

Hawk, Steve
Stephen Hawk performs as a free-lance trumpeter and has played lead trumpet for such jazz legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Watrous, Bob Mintzer, The Woody Herman Orchestra, The Manhattan Transfer, and The New York Voices and Diane Schuur. In addition Hawk has played for Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, Red Skelton, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, The Four tops and the Temptations. His recent CD, "The Hawks Out" was selected by New York's Cadence Magazine as its Outstanding Big Band Recording. Stephen Hawk is Associate Professor of Music at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania where he directs the Jazz Ensemble and teaches the studio trumpet. He is also in very much demand as a guest performer in colleges and high schools and as a clinician and adjudicator. Mr. Hawk received his Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance from Western Illinois and Master of Music degree from the University of Texas in Austin and is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree.

Henderson, Joe
Joe Henderson is currently the band director at Kingsway Regional High School in Woolwich Township, NJ. He has taught instrumental music in the district for six years and has taught in the south jersey and Delaware areas for the past 12 years. During his tenure, he has directed high school marching band, concert band, jazz ensemble, and pit orchestra, and has also taught courses in music theory and electronic music. Mr. Henderson received a BS in Music Education from West Chester University in 1998 as well as a minor in jazz studies. During his time at West Chester University, he was a four year member of the criterions jazz ensemble and had the opportunity to perform with Ernie Watts and Matt Neiss. Mr. Henderson also studied jazz improvisation and arranging with Larry McKenna and Peter Paulsen. Following West Chester University, Mr. Henderson completed graduate course work at the University of the Arts studying under such notable educators such as Ed Lisk and Stephen Melillo. Mr. Henderson is demand as a marching band music arranger and has designed for fine programs in the tri state area as well as the mid-west. Most recently, Mr. Henderson has served as a marching adjudicator and is a consultant for marching bands and jazz ensembles in the greater Philadelphia area.

Hyzer, Matt
Matt is a pianist and arranger from the South Jersey area. He earned a Bachelors in Jazz Piano Performance (2005) and a Master of Arts in Teaching (2006) from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. His teachers include Carol Ingram, Clarence Watson, jazz piano and organ legend Trudy Pitts and Jamar Jones. As a piano player he has shared the stage with many great musicians including: Rick Kerber, Dennis Wasko, Chris Vadala, Bill Watrous, Jeff Jarvis, Rick Lawn, R&B Artist Vivian Green, Jamar Jones and Tower of Power's Dave Garibaldi. As a free-lance writer/arranger he has contributed to the catalogs of Alfred Publishing, Lifeway Christian Resources, The Lorenz Company, Mercer University Press, Shawnee Press and Word Music. Matt teaches music at Moorestown High School and also teaches piano lessons at the Conservatory of Musical Arts in Haddonfield, NJ.

Jacoby, Marc
Before joining the faculty at WCU, Marc Jacoby was an Associate Professor of Music at the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, IL. As Technology Coordinator at VanderCook, he was responsible for all academic and administrative computers and networks, managing the college’s web site, and developing instructional technology materials with the faculty. While in Chicago, he co-founded the Dos Claves Orquesta, a Latin-Jazz big band and workshop for Chicago area youth. The ensemble has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Illinois Music Educator’s Association Conference, Hot House’s Jazz en Clave Festival, Chicago Historical Society, Harold Washington Cultural Center, and school jazz festivals around the region. Dr. Jacoby is an Apple Authorized Trainer, an artist/clinician for the Yamaha Corporation and Vic Firth, Inc., a Sibelius Ambassador/Trainer, an M-Audio M-Powered Educator, and is on the Educational Advisory Committee for Latin Percussion, Inc. He is an active performer and clinician and has presented at the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic, Music Educator’s National Conference, Association for Technology in Music Instruction, TI:ME national and regional conferences, Winter Guard International, Drum Corps International, and many state teachers conventions.

Jarvis, Jeff
Jeff Jarvis has distinguished himself as a multi-faceted music industry professional. His solo recordings as a jazz trumpeter and composer have placed high on national air play charts and have won him critical acclaim. Jeff's early career as a studio trumpeter encompasses over 100 albums for such names as Lou Rawls, Melba Moore, and Michael Jackson. Live performance credits include Dizzy Gillespie, Louie Bellson, Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks, Jimmy Heath, Joe Lovano, Henry Mancini, Slide Hampton, Kevin Mahogany, Grady Tate, Eddie Daniels, Rob McConnell, and Doc Severinsen. Jeff is frequently commissioned to compose for various school, military and professional musical groups. He is a contributing editor for The Instrumentalist, in addition to writing for other music trade journals such as Flute Talk, Band & Orchestra Product News, and Jazz Educators Journal. Jarvis has coauthored The Jazz Educators Handbook with Doug Beach, and a jazz piano book with Matt Harris entitled The Chord Voicing Handbook. A trumpet artist, Jeff has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and Indonesia. He has most recently been featured with the USAF Airmen of Note, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Jazz Orchestra, US Army Jazz Ambassadors, Jazz Knights of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, Riverside Jazz Orchestra, Oslo Big Band (Norway), US Army Blues, Frank Mantooth Jazz Orchestra, Denver Symphony Orchestra, USAF Shades of Blue and more. Jeff Jarvis is on the adjunct faculty at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In high demand as a honors jazz band conductor, clinician and lecturer, he presents workshops for jazz educators and students of all ages. Jeff is the music director of the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, serves as jazz coordinator for the Texas Bandmasters Association, and is a former Vice-President of the International Association For Jazz Education. Jeff is CEO of Kendor Music, Inc., the first educational music publisher to provide jazz charts written especially for students.

Kapralick, Randy
Randy received his BA in Studio Music & Jazz Performance from the University of Miami School of Music in 1997. Immediately upon graduating, he was hired to play lead trombone for the legendary Motown groups The Four Tops & The Temptations. Throughout his career, Randy has had the chance to perform/record with Tito Puente, Aretha Franklin, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Maria Schneider, KC & the Sunshine Band, Frankie Valli, Bill Watrous, and Robert Goulet. Randy teaches at University of the Arts where he is Chair of the Trombone Department and leads the Blue Note Ensemble. Randy also directs the Uarts Regional High School All-Star Big Band and is very excited to be the conductor for the 2010 Region III All South Jersey Jazz Band.

Kenney, Dave
Dave Kenney is uniquely qualified by virtue of his talent, expertise, and experience to educate both students and teachers, and to evaluate the quality of their performances and programs. He has performed professionally on tenor saxophone and piano with the Glenn Miller Band, Jay and the Techniques, and Marie Osmond. Mr. Kenney studied piano with the legendary jazz artist, Jimmy Amadie. He currently directs his own quintet, a jazz trio, and also freelances with many local artists in the greater Philadelphia area. For the last 12 years, Mr. Kenney has been the principal pianist for the Brian Pastor Big Band. He has also been featured with the Dave Stahl big band.   Mr. Kenney holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education and a Master of Music degree in Performance, both from West Chester University. Recently retired after a teaching career spanning 34 years in the Quakertown Community School District, Mr. Kenney taught at every grade level of instrumental music. He is the founder and ‘architect’ of the very successful Jazz Band program in the Quakertown School District. His Jazz and Concert bands were renowned for their consistently high levels of performance. The Strayer Middle School Jazz Band under his direction received nothing less than a superior rating for 14 years in a row! Mr. Kenney is one of the founders of the Bux-Mont Intermediate Honors Band for students in grades seven and eight. His greatest legacy, though, may be the number of his former students who now direct successful music programs throughout the country.

Kerber, Ron
Ron Kerber has been one of Philadelphia’s first call musicians for over two decades, with a career that has crossed genres and styles.  He was formerly saxophonist, composer and producer for Blue Note recording artists “Pieces of a Dream”.  He has also recorded with Jimmy Bruno, Phil Woods, Gerald Veasley, Jim Ridl, Patti LaBelle, Vanessa Williams, Lou Rawls and Teddy Pendergrass among others.  He has toured with Burt Bacharach, Rod Stewart and Diana Ross and performed with Joni Mitchell, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, Michael Buble, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations and Johnny Mathis to name a few. Ron's latest CD  'Rround in Circles  is available on the Dreambox Media Label. Ron is a member of Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, has played with the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Ballet.  He has also played in the orchestras of the Forrest, Walnut Street, Merriam and Prince Theaters Ron heads the Division of Performance Studies at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he is also Chair of The Saxophone Department.  He has served on the Board of Trustees of The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and as President of the Philadelphia Chapter.  He continues to be active with the Academy sitting on both the Jazz Screening and Nominating Committees for the Grammy Awards each year as well as the National Education Committee.

Kinsey, Alan
Alan Kinsey has established himself as a standard in percussion excellence, and is in demand as a clinician, teacher, and adjudicator. He has an in-depth and varied career in jazz performance as demonstrated by his engagements with Bob Brookmeyer, Gene Bertocini, Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, and Frank Mantooth. Alan has also worked in concert with Tori Amos, Joel Grey, Maureen McGovern, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, and Harry Connick Jr, to name a few. He has also performed with road productions of the shows 42nd St, Chicago, and Cats. Mr Kinsey has directed many ensemble appearances and has presented clinics at music educator’ s conventions in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Ohio, and Kansas, and jazz festivals such as Notre Dame Jazz Festival, The North Texas Jazz Festival, and the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Festival. A native of Souderton PA,  Alan has completed Under-graduate and Master’s degrees, both in percussion performance at Temple University, in Philadelphia PA. Mr Kinsey has a DA in Percussion Performance/Jazz Administration from University of Northern Colorado. He holds a Certification to Teach music in New Jersey schools K-12, and currently is an advisor to the Egg Harbor Township School District in the area of instrumental music. Alan Kinsey is active in the Percussive Arts Society and the Jazz Educator’s Network, New Jersey Music Educator’s Association, and the Technology Institute for Music Educators.  

Kosmaceski, Frank
Frank Kosmaceski is a woodwind specialist who is in wide demand in the Greater Philadelphia area as a professional Broadway musical woodwind specialist.  He has played for professional entertainers such as Liberace, Sergio Franchi, Sammy Davis and Nelson Sardelli.  Kosmaceski was also the lead alto saxophone player and director of the jazz band for the 307th Army Band for 18 years and the lead alto saxophone and leader of a big band, “The 66er’s”, specializing in “Big Band” music from the 1930’s through the 1960’s. Mr. Kosmaceski holds a Bachelor’s Degree in performance/education from Temple University and is a retired instrumental music teacher from the Centennial School System.

Lawn, Rick
Richard (Rick) Lawn is Dean of the College of Performing Arts at The University of the Arts. Formerly, Rick was affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin where he served as Director of Jazz Studies, Chair of the Department of Music, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He also served as Director of the Center for Advanced Studies in the Arts at UT. Before joining the Texas faculty he was Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Iowa. Rick holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Eastman School of Music where he specialized in woodwind performance and jazz studies.  His primary teachers have been Rayburn Wright, Manny Albam, Chuck Mangione and William Osseck. Rick has received several notable composition grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and, as a member of the Nova Saxophone Quartet, has recorded on the Musical Heritage Society, Crystal and Equilibrium labels. The Sea Breeze record label recently issued “Unknown Soldiers,” a CD recorded by the Third Coast Jazz Orchestra featuring his compositions and arrangements. It has received favorable reviews in Cadence Magazine and The Austin American Statesman. Kendor Music, CL Barnhouse, Walrus Music, Concept Music, Alfred Music, Dorn, and UNC Press music among others publish his music.  His arrangement of “Donna Lee” was recorded by Bobby Sanabria’s New York Latin big band on his 2001 Grammy nominated CD. Rick’s books entitled The Jazz Ensemble Directors Manual and Jazz Theory and Practice (that includes interactive software) have become staples among jazz educators and students.  McGraw-Hill will release his latest project in 2005 entitled Experiencing Jazz that will include a text, companion CDROM and two-disc audio anthology. Ensembles under his direction have won acclaim at national conferences and festivals throughout the US and Europe. Performing experiences include extended engagements with Lionel Hampton, Chuck Mangione, the Rochester Philharmonic and the Austin Symphony among others. He has performed in back-up orchestras for Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Natalie Cole, Marian McPartland, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Dianne Schuur, Rosemary Clooney and a host of others. Leland, Tim
Tim LeLand comes to us as widly known Sxaophone performer. He has played with The New York Voices,Devon Gardner (Singer from the Duke Elington Big Band), The University of the Arts Big Band, The Rick Kerber Tribute Ensemble, Gerald Veasley, Chris Farr, Pat Martino, Bill Waltrouss, Dennis DiBlasio and Jeff Jarvis just to name a few. Tim Leand holds a Master of Music in Education and  is currently teaching in the Gibbsboro

Marrella, Joe
Joe Marrella has over twenty-five years judging experience involving musical performers. He has been asked to adjudicate groups in all parts of the United States and Canada. Joe was an individual Snare Drum Champion and has also instructed five National Champion Percussion Ensembles. He has been engaged to consult on various musical groups and has conducted seminars for music educators throughout the country. Further, he has conducted training for judges associations and assisted in the evaluation of them. Locally, Joe has taught workshops at West Chester University for music educators as they earn credits for their advanced degrees. He is a former member of the Advisory Council for the University of the Arts, located in Philadelphia. He has also written articles for musical publications that have been distributed to 35,000 high schools in the United States. He has also been selected as a Hall of Fame Instructor, Arranger, and Judge. He was inducted into the Cavalcade of Bands Hall of Fame in 2006. In addition to playing, judging and consulting in the musical arena, Joe has directed 22 theatrical musicals as well as being nominated for Best Direction twice by the Perry Awards of New Jersey. Joe has served for three years as a television color commentator for the broadcast of various competitions involving musical groups and served as the Cavalcade of Bands Education Director for four years.

Mazzeo, Frank
Frank Mazzeo has performed with: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Patti LaBelle, Christopher Cross, Peabo Bryson, Sheena Easton, Red Rodney, Lee Konitz, Bill Watrous, Mel Lewis, concerts with the New York, New Jersey and the Philadelphia Saxophone Quartets, the Concerto Soloist's of Philadelphia and Bernadette Peters. His studies have included Harold Bennett, John Krell, Harold Karabell, and Phil Woods.  Mr. Mazzeo premiered a "Concerto for a New Millenium" a composition composed for him and John Popper of "Blues Travelers".  Mr. Mazzeo has a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from West Chester University and Masters in Music Performance from Temple University. Mr. Mazzeo has taught saxophone, was the Director of the Lab Band and Summer Jazz Institute at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.  Mr. Mazzeo has been voted into the Outstanding Young Men of America and many times into  the Who's Who in America's teachers. He also serves on the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, the Grants Committee as well being Vice-Chair of the New Jersey Arts in Education Committee. Melton, Ken
Ken Melton is an experienced and sought after jazz guitarist. He has played with such groups as Dave Stahl, and the Squib Pharmaceuticals Tonight Show Band. Melton is well know in the area for his performances in musicals, weddings and studio work. Mr. Melton received his Bachelor of Music with emphasis in Jazz Performance from Temple University's Esther Boyer College of Musicc. Mr. Melton is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators. He has  been Director of Instrumental Music at  Harry S. Truman High School for the past six years where he directs a highly respected jazz ensemble known for it' s unique adaptation of improvisational techniques. Melton writes and/or arranges all or most of the music for his jazz and marching bands. He was named Who's Who of American Teachers in 1997.

Muller, Danny
Danny Muller is an accomplished saxophone performer who has played with the Philadelphia Boys Choir, pianist Joanne Brackeen, trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Michael Brecker, Ralph Bowen, guitarist Jimmy Bruno, drummer Greg Fields,  singer Wayne Newton, alto saxophonist Greg Osby, singer Dennis Rowland, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, trumpeter Bobby Shew, bassist Gerald Veasley, saxophonist Grover Washington Jr, as well as performances in the Philadelphia, Atlantic City and New York areas. Danny Muller attended the University of the Arts and received a Bachelors Degree in Music Performance and a Masters Degree in Music Education Danny was the 2001 Philadelphia High School Grammy Band Assistant Director and was with LaSalle College High School for Boys teaching jazz improvisation and woodwinds since 2002. He has also been at the University of the Arts teaching saxophone since 2003.

Nowak, Jerry
Jerry Nowak really needs no introduction to the musical community because he is already so well known as a prolific writer and arranger of jazz band, ensemble, orchestra and concert band literature. He is also a respected writer for film scores. There is not enough space here to list his many credits in the field of Music Composition and Education. Mr. Nowak is currently Professor of Music, Bucks County Community College.

Phillips, Earl
Mr. Phillips is a graduate, with honors, of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania holding a Bachelor's Degree in Trombone Performance, a Masters Degree in Music Education and is anticipating a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance from Rowan University (’11). As a professional bass trombonist, Mr. Phillips has had the pleasure of performing with such jazz greats as Clark Terry, Kurt Elling, John Fedchock, Jeff Jarvis, Denis DiBlasio, Jim McFalls, Patti Austin, and Gregg Field. Mr. Phillips has also had the pleasure of performing on Broadway and continues to perform in local and Philadelphia theater pit orchestras. Earl also leads his own professional Big Band. The Earl Phillips Big Band (EPBB) is an 18-piece big band that performs primarily in the Philadelphia area and is comprised of some of the finest musicians in the Philadelphia and New York scenes. Be sure to come check out Earl’s band tackle his writing whenever you can! Earl is also a voting member for the Grammy Awards. Mr. Phillips teaches at Cherokee High School where he directs the Jazz Ensemble and Music Technology programs. Mr. Phillips is a published author having articles printed in both the "Jazz Education Journal," and "Downbeat Magazine." From 2005-2007, Mr. Phillips was the director of the Philadelphia Grammy Band and was the guest director of the 2008 All-South Jersey Jazz Ensemble. Earl is also a voting member for the Grammy Awards. Mr. Phillips has also had the pleasure of recording with some of today's largest pop stars, most notably Boyz II Men and Will Smith. His session with John Legend was part of an album (So Amazing: A Tribute to Luther Vandross) that won 2 Grammy Awards in 2005

Powers, Bill
Bill Powers is a recently retired music educator who taught elementary, high school, and college bands throughout his career. He was the band director at West York Area Senior High School from 1974-1977, Director of Bands at Gettysburg College from 1977-1983, and band director at Hempfield High School from 1983-2009. Additionally, from 1987-2009 he served as the Hempfield School District Music Supervisor, where he led a coordinated and comprehensive K-12 Music program. He holds degrees from Gettysburg College (B.S. in Music Education), The Pennsylvania State University (M.Ed. in Music Education), and Millersville University (Supervisory Certificate). Professional affiliations to his credit include PMEA, the National Association for Music Education, the National Band Association, the American Federation of Musicians, and the Cavalcade of Bands Judges Association. He is a former member of the Bill Dayton Orchestra and the Dave Stahl Big Band. He is a past president of the Lancaster-Lebanon Music Educators Association (1997-1999) and the Cavalcade of Bands (2000-2008). Bill was named the Cavalcade “Director of the Year” for 2007-2008, and also was inducted into the Cavalcade “Hall of Fame” in 2008.

Pursell, Dr. John
Dr. John Pursell is retired from his position as the Senior Ceremonial Trumpeter with the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. Today he performs nationwide as a trumpet artist and clinician for the Yamaha Music Corporation. He has performed with artists such as Ann Jillian, Lou Rawls, Peter Nero, James Earl Jones, and Roy Clark. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in trumpet from the University of Maryland and has published numerous articles on trumpet pedagogy in national journals. He is the author of "What I've Learned- The Freelance Trumpeters Guide to Professioanl Music." Dr. Purcell is currently the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Gettysburg College.

Pusey, Bill
Bill Pusey is a graduate of the Philadelphia Musical Academy in 1974 ( U. OfArts) with a Bachelor of Music. He has toured with the Glenn Miller, BuddyRich Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Big bands along with headliners Burt Bacharach, Anthony Newley & Ben Vereen.Pusey has also toured Europe, Australia & South America in the '80's with various European big bands performing, recording and tv performances with Dizzy Gillespie,Dave Holland, Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman & Howard Johnson. Bill Pusey has been first trumpet in Philadelphia, NY &  Atlantic City performing for Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Doc Severinsen, Johnny Mathis, Louie Bellson, Natalie Cole. Mr. Pusey has performed on broadway as well as Philadelphia.theatres with shows such as: Grand Hotel, Cats, Meet Me In St. Louie, Fosse, Saturday Nite Fever A Chorus Line, Kismet & Bubblin' Brown Sugar. He was First Trumpet with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops for 3 yrs.He is co-producer,arranger & contractor for the Musical Christmas Tree performing in phila. for 12 yrs. He is presently lead trumpet & house contractor for Caesars Hotel in Atlantic City and teaching privately at the NJ School of Music.

Rodgers, Kevin
Kevin Rodgers has performed as an accompaning musician with Johnny Mathis, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Nancy Wilson, The Temptations and a wide variety of notable performers. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by the Ocean City “Pops” Orchestra, The  United States Army Brass Quintet and Brass  Ensemble, Abstract Truth, and the Jazz Ensembles of  Temple University and University of the Arts. As an Educator, he has conducted Jazz and Concert Ensembles at The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, St. Joseph’s University and Swarthmore College. He is currently serving in his tenth year as a Cavalcade of Bands adjudicator.

Rozum, John
John Rozum is an independent, free-lance jazz drummer who has performed with several big bands and combos throughout the northeast part of the country. He has been playing and teaching professionally for 43 years, placing many students in junior and senior county, district, regional and state band and orchestra, as well as many of the top DCA and DCI drum and bugle corps throughout the country. Throughout the years, he has been involved in studio recordings and has performed with the Reading Pops, the Reading Philharmonic Orchestra and was the percussionist for over 40 Reading Civic Broadway Musicals. He has been on the road with the Hamid-Morton Shrine circus from Massachusetts and the Garden Brothers circus from Toronto Canada and has backed up such celebrities as Helen O’Connell, Dick Shawn, Phyllis Mcquire, Jack Carter, Myron Floren, Al Cohn, ( Woody Herman ) Richie Cole, ( Buddy Rich ) Johnny Petillo ( The Duprees ) Gerald Veasley and the Day Brothers to name a few. He has performed and adjudicated with former members of the Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Glenn Miller, Harry James and Tommy Dorsey orchestras as well as Jim Snidero, Chris Vadala, Dave Llama, Dennis DiBlasio, Dave Stahl, Matt Neiss, Bob Curnow and Larry Kershner He is a member of the Percussive Arts Society and has been listed in the International Drum Teachers Guide for Modern Drummer magazine. He is on staff as a percussion arranger for the periodical, “The International Association of Rudimental Percussionists” and is the three time Drum Corps Associates drum set champion. John has performed with the Reading Big Band, the Sam Peters Swing Band, the Kutztown and West Chester University Alumni Jazz Bands, the West Virginia University Jazz Ensemble, Coastal Carolina University Jazz Band, the Al Raymond Big Band, the Audubon Jazz Explosion, the Jump City Jazz Orchestra, the Myrtle Beach Big Band, the Reading and Boyertown Directors Big Band and The Music Express Bugle Corps out of Cinnaminson New Jersey. Currently, John is playing with Gamut, a 5 piece Jazz Ensemble, The Last Big Band, the Bone Tom Dixieland Jazz Band, Fancy Brass and is the drum set player for the Swing House Jazz Drum and Bugle Corps out of Carney’s Point New Jersey. He is the percussion arranger and instructor for the Oley Valley marching band. He has been a percussion judge for Drum Corps Associates, the Cavalcade, the Mid-Atlantic Percussion Society. He has been a guest judge for the OZARKO Band Festival at South West Missouri State University. He is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators and a jazz band adjudicator for jazz band contests throughout the tri-state area.

Scannella, Joe
Joe  Scannella is an educator and trumpet performer who has played with Aretha Franklin,Tony Bennett, The Temptations, Rosemary Clooney, Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme. He was the also Lead Trumpet Player, Resorts International Hotel and Casino, Sands Hotel and Casino, Harrahs Hotel and Casino, Trump Plaza Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey.  In addition, Joe played with Kenny I Orchestra, Somers Point, New Jersey Perform, arrange and choreograph all types of musical Performances for weddings, corporate parties, and cast parties including the Sopranos’ Cast Party. His club appearances include .  Variety Club Telethon, the Jerry Lewis Telethon and numerous A&E specials with such stars as Donna Summer, the Temptations, Shirley Bassey and Frankie Valli. Joe Scannella holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from the College of New Jersey and is a Private instructor to trumpet students, performs instrument demonstrations for Regional Music in Millville, provides trumpet Instruction to High School Jazz Bands, including Cherokee High School, Shawnee High School and Pennsauken High School and provides judging expertise for Local High School Jazz competitions

Schmearer, Bill
Bill Schmearer comes to us with a vast background as a jazz pianist and is currently the director of Jazz Studies, Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band at the New England Music Camp.  Schmearer’s thirty years of jazz experience in the New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore area include performances with Diane Schur and Mel Torme`. Mr. Schmearer holds a BS in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a MA from Temple University. His post graduate studies include courses at West Chester  University of Pittsburgh, West Virginia University, Pennsylvania State University and Marywood College. Bill Schmearer  is in demand throughout the North East United States as a guest conductor at jazz music camps and festivals.

Schmidt, Dr. Jack
Dr. Jack Schmidt is a trombonist and in demand for his artistic abilities in a variety of musical endeavors. At one time, he was a freelance trombone player in Chicago where he appeared with numerous orchestras, brass groups and other ensembles throughout the Midwest. He has recorded CD’s for Polygram, Liturgical Press with the Schola Cantorum of Chicago. Schmidt has recently conducted the Delaware Valley Concert Band on their premier CD.  In addition to the many other demands on his time, he leads yearly summer music and study tours to Vienna, Salzburg and Venice. Dr. Schmidt received his BM in Trombone performance from Wheaton College, an MM from DePaul University and a PhD from Northwestern University. At present, Dr. Schmidt is Assistant Professor of Music and Chair of the Departments of English and Liberal Arts at Delaware Valley College.

Schwartz, Ben
Ben Schwartz is currently the Band Director and Percussion Arranger for Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, NJ, where he teaches concert, jazz band and music theory. Ben has taught and wrote music for several competitive high school marching bands and drum and bugle corps in New Jersey over the past decade, including Governor Livingston, Sayreville, Lakewood, and Fusion Core Drum and Bugle Corps. While earning a Music Education degree at the Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers), Ben studied classical percussion with marimba virtuoso She-e Wu, and also studied with DCI hall of famer Dennis Delucia. And as an arranger, he has arranged percussion scores alongside some of the top names in the drum corps world, including Jim Prime Jr. and Larry Kerchner. As a drummer and percussionist, Ben plays various styles of music as well as local community theater shows. He has taken lessons with Tommy Igoe and Bernard Purdie, and he has won the Drum Corps Associates I&E Drum Set competition two times, in 2006 and 2009.

Scott, Dr. Dick
Dr. Dick Scott has had a long and varied career  as a big band saxophonist and jazz ensemble musician which included playing in the United States Army and the University of Southern Mississippi Jazz Bands. In addition to his own band the "Manhattans", he has also performed with the Herbert Wade Orchestra and the Les Brown Band  with Bob Hope and is in demand as a jazz clinician, arranger, adjudicator and musical director of theater productions.  Some of the most notable musicians with whom Dick has studied include Lucian Calliet (film scoring), Romeo Cacarrino, Gomer Pound, Robert Hayes, Bill Presser (composition and arranging) and Don Jacoby (studio recording techniques). Scott has also performed with Don Doane, Dalton Smith and  Rufus Jones and Don (Jake) Jacoby. Dick Scott holds a Batchelor of Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi, a Master of Music Education from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Combs College of Music. Scott is a retired music educator and is presently the former Jazz Band Administrator for the Cavalcade of Bands.

Shanefield, Drew
Drew Shanefield currently serves as both an instrumental music teacher for the School District of Haverford Township, where he directs the Jazz Ensemble, and as a faculty member in the Department of Music and Dance at Swarthmore College where he teaches jazz theory, history, jazz composition as well as directs the Jazz Ensemble. Drew maintains a busy schedule as a composer and arranger for ensembles across the United States, Europe and Japan.  He is a frequent presenter of sessions at annual conferences across the country.  Recent sessions and premieres include the 2008 Midwest Clinic, the Bands of America Summer Symposium, numerous state MEA conferences, the Texas Band Masters Association, well as clinic appearances with ensembles across the country.  Recent commission projects include compositions for the University of Houston, Eastern Kentucky University, Swarthmore College, the Vivace Women’s Brass Band of Tokyo as well as numerous public school commissions.  His compositions are published by Northeastern Music Publications Inc., the Neil A. Kjos Music Publishing Company, and Marching Show Concepts Inc. Drew graduated from New York University in 1992.  He received a Masters in Music Education degree from Queens College and a Masters in Music Performance from West Chester University.  He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at Widener University.  He is a member of the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).  Additionally, Drew is a performing artist/clinician for Yamaha band instruments

Stein, Rob
Rob is a graduate of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, holding both a Master's degree in music education, and a Bachelor's degree in trumpet performance. As a music educator in both the private and public setting, his experience includes extensive work with drum corps, marching bands, jazz bands, wind ensembles, pit orchestras and private lesson studios. While at the University of the Arts, Rob studied with Dennis Wasko, Matt Gallagher and George Rabbi. He also had the honor of being the lead trumpet player in the U Arts big band under the direction of renown educator Bill Zaccagni. Rob has had the privilege of playing with many outstanding musicians, such as Dave Liebman, Slide Hampton, Jeff Jarvis, Carl Allen and more. Currently, Rob is an elementary instrumental music director in the East Windsor Regional School District, and is also an adjunct faculty at the University of the Arts teaching marching band education. He is the proud owner of his marching band business, "Standing 'O' Marching Arts Specialists," and has the honor of judging with Cavalcade of Bands during their marching season as well.

Stimson, Ed
Tabulator - Ed has been developing the Cavalcade tabulators recap programs for many years since Cavalcade started using lap computers. He retired from the Colonial School District (Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) after 32 years. Currently is web master of Cavalcade of Bands.

Twiford, Jeff
Mr. Twiford served as director of the Methacton High School Jazz Band, Fairview Village, Pennsylvania, from 1973 to 1984. The band won many awards in local, national and international festivals, including first place in the 1979 International Music Festival in Toronto. It was honored by being selected  to perform at the 1979 conference of the National Association of Jazz Educators. Presently, Mr. Twiford is director and lead trombone for the Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School "Red and Blues" Alumni Jazz Band, is Director of Music at Plymouth Valley Community Church, and performs regularly with the Jazz Duo “Joyful Noise” throughout the Philadelphia area. He served as Army Bandmaster, director and trombone soloist of the 276th Army Band, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, from 1971 to 1984 and was recognized as an "Outstanding Jazz Educator" in 1979 by the National Association of Jazz Educators. Mr. Twiford received his jazz education at Penn State University, with Dr. William Fabrizio at Beaver College, at the United States Navy School of Music, and with Hank Levy and Dick Shearer at the Stan Kenton Jazz Clinic. Since 1984, Mr. Twiford has served as a school administrator in the Souderton Area, North Penn, and Boyertown Area School Districts. Jeff is now retired from public schools and is Cavalcade of Bands Jazz Coordinator.

Villella, Dr. John
John Villella was member of the “Criterion” Jazz Ensemble at West Chester and at one time was the student director of the second jazz ensemble. In addition, he has served as an adjudicator for music festivals, Music in the Parks and several local jazz festivals. Dr. Villella holds a BS and MM in Music Education from West Chester University and an Ed. D from Widner University. John Villella is presently Professor of Instrumental Music and Music Education at West Chester University.

West, Tom
Thomas J. West is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over ten years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, orchestra director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. He is currently a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts, a unique school which is part of the innovative Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School. Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University with Master's equivalency. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who’s Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Whittemann, Wilbur
Director of Bands at Georgian Court University for 24 years. In 2001 Georgian Court University named Wilbur as its Director of Jazz Studies. Conducted bands and performed on trumpet with many world famous musicians and orchestras: Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Arturo Sanduval, Urbie Green, Slide Hampton, Louis Bellson, Bill Watrous, Allen Vizzutti, Steve Turre, Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Bob Mintzer, Lew Tabackin, Randy Brecker, Red Rodney, Dave Weckl, Jose Feliciano, Little Anthony, The Platters, Shari Lewis and the Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestras. Wilbur is conductor of orchestras with the string sections from the Philadelphia Orchestra, Trenton Symphony and the Philly Pops. Ranging in size from 3 to 40 musicians, Wilbur Wittemann Orchestras perform all styles of music. Wilbur performs on cornet, trumpet, and flugelhorn with his Bourbon Street Dixieland Band, Musicology, Wilbur Wittemann Revue, and The Lakewood Jazz Ensemble. He has been arranging and coordinating various concert series and jazz festivals for over 25 years. Wilbur has received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the NJ International Association of Jazz Education. Selected as Teacher of the Year two times. Recently he has been selected as Citizen of the Year by the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and elected to the Alumni Hall of Fame. Wilbur is one of the tri-state areas most requested clinicians and festival judges. In the month of July Wilbur directs a very successful summer music camp for musicians of all ages.

Winemiller, Roberta
Roberta Winemiller has wide and varied background, as a woodwind specialist in both jazz and ensemble performance. Hailing from the Cleveland, Ohio area, Roberta performed with big bands and small combos for six years where she was also sought after as a clinician and adjudicator. She is a certified judge with the Cavalcade of Bands Marching Band Division. Winemiller was the Assistant Director of Bands at Temple University for seven years and is currently involved as a bassoonist with the popular Liberty Woodwind Quintet. This group performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She also plays keyboard and tenor sax with an original group,Natural Reaction which has a new CD release. Ms. Winemiller holds a Bachelor of Music from Bowling Green, Ohio and a Master of Music Performance from Kent State. She has continued her professional education with post graduate courses at Temple University. Dr. Winemiller is presently a guidance counselor in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District.
